How to Get Started with Wall Décor

Blank walls are exciting, full of potential, and can be downright intimidating. How do you get started? How do you know what wall art, wall decals, or wall décor to choose? This major design opportunity can tie your space together with a few simple additions.

Start with Measurements

Doing some math and measuring will keep you from making mistakes and having to re-hang pieces. The following steps will give you a range of measurements for wall art that covers about 4/7 and 3/4 of your wall. Measure the length and width of your available wall space (the blank area you want to fill, not covered by furniture, molding, and so on). Multiply the width by .57 and .75. Multiply the length by .57 and .75. The width and length of the wall décor you want should measure within the range of these calculations.

Go Big … or Go Multiple

Typically, if you have a large blank wall, go with a large piece (it’s better to go too big than too small). Oversized wall art or décor fills a visual field and creates a focal point, while too small pieces look forgotten and not well-considered. If you don't have a large piece, consider multiple pieces or a gallery wall. Small canvases, wall sculptures, wall art sets, photographs, faux taxidermy (or a combination of all) can have the same effect together as a one big piece.

One final tip: Use Post-it notes to mark corners where you want pieces to hang, or pin sheets of paper that are the same sizes as the wall décor you want to better visualize them on the wall. With a little forethought and planning you’ll have an eye-catching wall in no time. There are so many options to choose from, so have fun shopping!
